Can you help me with dos and don’ts for buying dental veneers online? I do not want to discredit any dentist’s skill with dental veneers. But if I can buy a complete set of eight veneers online for the cost of a single porcelain veneer from a dentist, why wouldn’t I get them online? Other than lower prices because of low overhead, is there a significant difference between getting veneers in-person vs. a dentist? I live two states away, but I am asking your practice because I am too far away to be a potential client. I’m hoping for an unbiased answer. Thank you. Jay R.
Hello, Jay,
Thank you for your inquiry. We will explain what to expect when buying dental veneers online vs. getting them from a dentist.
Porcelain Veneers vs. Buying Veneers Online
We will review the differences between porcelain veneers and buying veneers online by comparing composition, function, appearance, and quality. Ultimately, you will decide which treatment option you prefer.
Composition
- Porcelain veneers – When you received veneers from an advanced cosmetic dentist, you will receive porcelain veneers. Your dentist will work with a skilled ceramist to customize high-quality ceramic veneers for you.
- Online veneers – Most online veneers are made of dental resin.
Function
- Porcelain veneers – A dental ceramist crafts one customized veneer for each affected tooth. And it fits snugly. Then a dentist bonds the veneers on. You can get one or more veneers.
- Online veneers – Unlike individual veneers, a single oral appliance fits over all your teeth. You will temporarily glue it on or snap or clip it over your teeth.
Appearance
- Porcelain veneers – A ceramist manipulates porcelain to match your natural tooth color and have natural gloss and translucence. A dentist may conservatively prepare your teeth to ensure a snug, natural-looking fit.
- Online veneers – Most are made of dental resin, so your smile will look okay. But it will not look beautiful and natural. Instead, it will look bulky, so don’t expect a beautiful smile. Also, when people talk to you close up, they can tell that your smile is fake. Online, a Snap-On Smile is one of the best options for dental veneers, but it is still limited in making your smile look better. And it is only available through a dentist.
Quality
- Porcelain veneers – Porcelain is a material that can last up to 20 years if you take good care of it.
- Online veneers – Most online veneers work well for special occasions but not everyday use. If you wear them daily, they may last a year or so.
What Can You Expect with Porcelain Veneers?
If you get porcelain veneers from an accredited cosmetic dentist, you will get a beautiful smile that lasts decades. But online veneers are synthetic and do not last. And although they cost less than porcelain veneers, you must purchase them repeatedly if you want to maintain your smile. Read the porcelain veneers page on Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s website to learn about potential downsides of buying online veneers.
Schedule a Veneers Consultation
We recommend that you schedule a porcelain veneers consultation with an expert cosmetic dentist. Prepare questions and be ready to explain how you want your smile to improve. And be sure to ask the dentist about payment plans and financing. If you are serious about your smile, start with a consultation.
