I get compliments on my smile even though some of my teeth are noticeably misaligned. I’ve been thinking about getting braces because my front teeth are off-center. Should I embrace my natural smile even if my teeth are somewhat crooked? My friends say my smile is fine, but I’m unsure. I don’t want to see an orthodontist who will give me braces just because I asked for them. Thanks. Kyndall from NJ
Kyndall,
It may seem reasonable that crooked teeth are natural and don’t need attention. However, it makes sense to care for your teeth and keep them healthy.
For example, inconsistent oral hygiene doesn’t lead to better outcomes. Even in the absence of pain early on, problems can develop quietly. Preventive care helps prevent minor issues from becoming severe.
Why Does Correct Alignment Matter for Your Teeth?

Aligning your teeth is a healthy choice
Misaligned teeth can interfere with both cleaning and function. Over time, this can increase the risk of dental problems.
When teeth are not properly aligned, you may experience:
- Food collecting in crowded or overlapping areas
- Difficulty maintaining consistent oral hygiene
- Increased risk for decay and gum disease
- Bite problems that place excess stress on teeth
Orthodontic treatment improves alignment, making your teeth easier to care for and more comfortable to use.
