How can I remove my porcelain veneers? After Invisalign, I got veneers to hide stains from a medication I took during my late teens and early 20s for a rare autoimmune disease. The disease is controlled now. I’ve gone back and forth with my dentist about the veneers, which I hate. Initially, I didn’t like them, but my dentist permanently bonded them, although I thought it was still the try-in phase. I guess my dentist was tired of trying to get the veneers right for me, so she just bonded them on. The veneers are too thick and too white. My dentist doesn’t want to take them off, so I figure I will do it myself. Will you please let me know how I can remove my porcelain veneers? Thanks. Serenity from NM
Serenity,
Thank you for your question.
We can imagine your disappointment after successful Invisalign treatment to get porcelain veneers that are too thick and too white. Still, you should not try to remove your porcelain veneers.
Can You Remove Your Porcelain Veneers?
You cannot remove your porcelain veneers. Dentists bond veneers to teeth, and removing them requires professional equipment and the skill of a cosmetic dentist. You can risk damaging your gums or teeth if you try it yourself.
Dentists can use a high-speed diamond bur or a handheld dental laser to remove porcelain restorations. Do-it-yourself removal can damage your tooth structure or pulp and lead to root canal treatment. You will not have clear visibility to remove the veneers, nor do you have the required training to do so.
Even if a dentist removed your veneers, you would need new ones unless the dentist who placed your initial veneers did not prepare or reshape your teeth before bonding the veneers.
Visit an experienced cosmetic dentist to examine your teeth and veneers and discuss your options. Read our post on what you can do to get veneers you will love.
